Top 5 Waterfall Adventures on the Sunshine Coast

If there’s one thing our family loves, it’s a good waterfall adventure. Lucky for us, the Sunshine Coast is home to some of the most beautiful cascades in the country. From easy walks to slightly more adventurous hikes, here are our top picks for waterfall spots we’ve visited together, complete with swim-friendly rock pools, lush rainforest, and even a sneaky vineyard stop on the way home.

1. Gardners Falls – A Day Out in Maleny

Gardners Falls is a beauty, and the best part? It’s only a short drive from one of our favourite hinterland towns, Maleny. We love combining the two into a perfect day trip—start with a coffee and a wander through Maleny’s charming main street, then head down to the falls for a swim and a picnic. The walk from the car park is super easy (perfect for little legs), and the rope swings over the rock pools make it extra fun for the kids.

2. Kondalilla Falls – A Refreshing Hike and Swim

Kondalilla Falls is one of those spots that ticks all the boxes: an easy but rewarding hike, a stunning waterfall, and a rock pool that’s perfect for a dip on a warm day. It’s just a short drive from the Sunshine Coast, making it a great half-day adventure. The walk down is shaded and scenic, but be warned—the climb back up might get the legs burning! Totally worth it though, especially when you’re rewarded with that crisp, refreshing water at the bottom.

Buderim Forest Park is proof that you don’t need to drive far to find a stunning waterfall. Serenity Falls is nestled right in the heart of Buderim, making it one of the most accessible waterfalls around. The short and easy walk takes you through lush rainforest before revealing the gorgeous cascade and swimming hole. 4. Baxter Falls – A Hike Worth the Effort

Baxter Falls is a bit more of an adventure, especially if you take the southern approach. The hike is moderate—challenging enough to make the kids feel like they’re on a real adventure but still manageable for a family day out. The waterfall itself is spectacular, and the suspension bridge along the way makes for some seriously good photo opportunities. One of our favourite things to do is reward ourselves with lunch at Flaxton Gardens on the way home. A delicious meal with a view? Yes, please!

While you can’t swim at Mapleton Falls, it’s still absolutely worth the visit.
